Over the years, a number of injured workers have come to me for consultation after first calling a law firm with a catchy or gimmicky name—often advertised through toll-free numbers and heavy marketing—but one that does not clearly identify an actual attorney. In many of those cases, the injured worker never spoke with a lawyer at all before signing up. That raises an obvious question: would you choose your doctor this way?
Workers’ compensation cases are not interchangeable, and neither are injured workers. Yet many high-volume firms operate on a call-center model, where intake staff or case managers handle most communications and legal decisions are made behind the scenes, if at all. The injured worker may not know who their lawyer is, may never speak to one directly, and may not realize that critical decisions are being made without a full understanding of their specific circumstances.
If you are looking for quality legal representation, it requires more than responding to a catchy name or a toll-free number. You should identify a real attorney, research their background, and actually speak with them. If you call a workers’ compensation law firm and cannot speak with an attorney—by phone or in person—that is a sign to move on. Doing otherwise can cost you valuable time, create unnecessary stress, and sometimes lead to mistakes that cannot be undone.
A workers’ compensation case should be handled by a lawyer who knows your situation, understands the medical and legal issues involved, and tailors a strategy to you—not to a marketing model. Seeking out a certified specialist in your area is one practical way to help ensure the job is done right and that the solution fits your case, not someone else’s.
